Norcross donates $100M to Cooper Health (updated)

Cooper University Health Care announced July 28 that George Norcross III will donate $100 million to the health system.
Board of Trustees Executive Chairman, co-President and co-CEO Dr. Anthony Mazzarelli and the board unveiled the donation. The contribution marks the largest single philanthropic gift in the institution’s history.
The group also said it’s one of the largest ever made to a health system in New Jersey.
“For more than 50 years, our family has been dedicated to Cooper, and we are so proud to make this contribution to ensure that Cooper and the thousands of talented, committed professionals who make a difference every day for the people of Camden and South Jersey can continue the important work of investing in their future and in Camden’s continued renaissance,” Norcross, who serves as chairman of the Cooper University Health Care Board of Trustees, said in a statement.
According to Cooper Health, the gift will go “toward investments in the City of Camden and Cooper’s larger service area in South Jersey, prioritizing education and community programs that create jobs, training, and opportunity.”
Family ties
The South Jersey powerbroker is making the donation in honor of his parents, George Norcross Jr. and Anne Carol Conner Norcross, as well as in recognition of his brothers, John, Donald and Philip; his children, Alessandra and Alexander; and Sandra Norcross.
Philip Norcross serves as chairman of The Cooper Foundation Board. Donald Norcross is the U.S. representative for New Jersey’s 1st congressional district. Alessandra Norcross also serves on The Cooper Foundation Board.
Cooper Health said the family’s commitment to the health system dates to the 1970s, when George Norcross Jr. served on the Cooper Hospital Board of Trustees.
Cooper Health has several major projects in development. That includes:
- A $300M outpatient campus in Gloucester Township
- The $3 billion Project Imagine, which will expand its Camden campus
