Quest Diagnostics completed its acquisition of select assets from Fresenius Medical Care’s laboratory business.

As part of the transaction, the Secaucus-based testing provider will now offer dialysis-related clinical testing services to independent clinics that FME subsidiary Spectra Laboratories previously served, according to an Aug. 5 press release.

Under a separate agreement, Quest will also begin providing comprehensive dialysis-related lab services later this month for FME’s U.S. dialysis centers. According to Quest, the transition will scale up over the coming months. It expects to complete the process in early 2026.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Through the arrangement, Quest said providers and patients at FME-operated dialysis clinics will benefit from its clinical leadership and diagnostic innovation in chronic kidney disease services. FME’s 3,700-plus sites across the U.S. serve over 200,000 patients annually, the release noted.

Quest will now provide testing for those locations, which will reduce transportation time and speed results reporting for some tests. Additionally, Quest said it expects to optimize return on capital invested into its lab network by performing testing during lower-volume daytime hours.

‘A healthier future’

Quest announced its acquisition plans in February. At the time, Chairman and CEO Jim Davis said, “Our relationship with Fresenius Medical Care will extend our industry-leading test portfolio in chronic kidney disease, one of the nation’s most prevalent chronic diseases, to include dialysis-related laboratory and water testing. It will also optimize Quest’s national scale to bring high-quality laboratory services closer to FME’s dialysis clinics and the patients under their care across the United States.”

FME Chief Executive Officer Helen Giza added, “This transaction is part of our comprehensive portfolio optimization strategy to drive operational efficiencies and will provide enhanced experiences for patients and our clinical employees by integrating Quest Diagnostic’s industry-leading expertise in laboratory medicine into our dialysis centers. Giza went on to note the two company’s mission of “creating a healthier future for patients.”
