Saker ShopRites Inc. holds the top spot on the latest NJBIZ list of family-owned businesses, ranked by number of employees in New Jersey. Founded in 1947 and led by Richard Saker, the company employs 12,000 people in New Jersey, with ownership held across four generations.
Second place goes to Wegmans Food Markets. Colleen Wegman and Danny Wegman lead the operation that began in 1916. Wegmans employs 4,300 people across the state, with four generations behind it.
At No. 3 sits Pomptonian Food Service. Mark Vidovich, Candy Vidovich and Cathy Penna guide the student food service business, launched in 1959 and staffed by 2,538 employees over three generations.
Doherty Enterprises Inc. takes fourth place. In business since 1985, Edward Doherty, Tim Doherty and Daniel Bratcher operate restaurants and salon suites, employing 2,500 people through three generations.
Rounding out the top five is Viking Yacht Co., where Patrick Healey oversees yacht manufacturing that started in 1964, spanning three generations and 1,544 employees.
