The New Jersey Treasury Department has begun distributing the second round of Stay NJ property tax relief payments to eligible seniors for tax year 2024. The average payment totals about $645.58.
The state issues Stay NJ benefits quarterly by paper check rather than as a lump sum. It calculates the figure alongside eligibility for the state’s ANCHOR and Senior Freeze property tax relief programs.
The first round of Stay NJ payments, averaging about $600, went out in February. Applicants who filed through the combined PAS-1 application may have qualified for one, two or all three programs depending on income and eligibility requirements.
Senior Freeze payments were distributed in summer 2025, while ANCHOR benefits went out in fall 2025.
The latest payments come as Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget calls for a scaled-back version of the Stay NJ program. The plan would reduce funding from about $1.2 billion to nearly $700 million. It would also tighten eligibility requirements and lowering the maximum benefit.
The Treasury Department also noted that applications are now open for the 2025 tax year. Eligible seniors and disabled residents can apply through the PAS-1 application at propertytaxrelief.nj.gov, with a Nov. 2, 2026, deadline.
Residents can seek assistance through regional tax offices, scheduled phone appointments, an online chat feature or the state’s property tax relief hotline.
