Women’s specialty retailer Francesca’s is reportedly shutting down all of its stores nationwide.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the Texas-headquartered brand is in the process of liquidating inventory across its 450-plus locations ahead of permanently closing. The fashion news outlet also reported that the decision to go dark is due to unpaid vendors.

It is not clear how long stores will remain open. While the chain is promoting discounts on its website, the impending closure is not mentioned.

Multiple reports also state that the mall-based chain is expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week.

Francesca’s previously sought bankruptcy six years ago amid financial struggles, increased online competition and pandemic-related challenges. As part of the restructuring process, the chain was acquired for $18 million by an affiliate of TerraMar Capital and Tiger Capital.

Francesca’s did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

Founded in 1999, Francesca’s is known for selling affordable women’s apparel, accessories, jewelry and gift items.

Within New Jersey, Francesca’s has 18 outposts statewide. That includes a shop that opened two years ago at American Dream in East Rutherford.

As of Jan. 20, the company has not listed any positions in the state’s WARN notice.

Mall staples such as Claire’s and Forever 21 also filed for within the past year.

After being unable to find a buyer, Forever 21 permanently closed all stores in May 2025. The brand still exists online, however.

When Claire’s declared last summer, it announced plans to close hundreds of stores. But a private-equity buyer paused some closures and intends to keep a significant number of stores open under a downsized footprint.
