Updated at 9:52 a.m. EST Nov. 12, 2024: Subs announced Nov. 12 that its weekend campaign raised $4.3 million for Best Buddies International.

The original story, published Nov. 8, continues below.

Jersey Mike’s Subs is again partnering with Best Buddies International to raise funds and awareness of the nonprofit’s mission of inclusion.

On Nov. 9 and 10, the Manasquan-based fast casual chain will donate 20% of sales from its nearly 3,000 locations nationwide to the organization.

Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies strives to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

With nearly 3,500 chapters worldwide, Best Buddies’ programs serve more than 1.3 million people, helping them secure rewarding jobs, live independently and make lifelong friendships.

Shriver – the brother of journalist Maria Shriver and nephew of President John F. Kennedy – commented, “In my 35 years in this field, I have never worked with a company more generous and committed to local community support than Jersey Mike’s.”

“They are an example of everything that is fantastic about our country – generosity and kindness – and their dedication to our mission underscores the positive impact business can make within their communities.”

In a statement, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO Peter Cancro encouraged customers participate in the fundraiser and “help Best Buddies build a more inclusive world where everyone can thrive.”

Job opportunities

The company is also in the process of working with Best Buddies to establish employment opportunities within Jersey Mike’s restaurants for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities (IDD), allowing them an opportunity to earn an income and independently support themselves.

Final tally

According to the franchise, the program has rolled out to 12 stores and counting.

Since its founding in 1956 as a small sandwich shop in Point Pleasant, Jersey Mike’s is now one of the fastest-growing quick-service restaurants in the U.S.

As part of its mission statement of “Giving … making a difference in someone’s life,” community outreach has remained a priority for Jersey Mike’s, with each of its stores regularly partnering with local charitable organizations as a way to give back.

In September, Hackensack Meridian Health Foundation honored Cancro for his role in chairing its recently launched Be The Difference Campaign.
