Magnificent 7: NJ hospitals named ‘World’s Best’ by Newsweek

Jessica Perry//March 3, 2023

Newsweek is out with its list of the World’s Best Hospitals for 2023, with seven from the New Jersey included in the ranks, and one placing in the top 50 in the U.S.

Presented with global data firm Statista, the fifth annual listing includes more than 2,300 hospitals in 28 countries. According to the publication, this year’s feature is the first that ranks the top 250.

And while no Garden State facilities made that part of the list, they were included with the more than 400 hospitals from the U.S. that were ranked. In New Jersey, two hospitals each from Atlantic Health System and RWJBarnabas Health appeared, with facilities from Hackensack Meridian Health, Valley Health and Englewood Health rounding out the mix.

N.J. hospitals, ranked:

No. 46: Morristown Medical Center, Morristown – Atlantic Health System
No. 57: Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack – Hackensack Meridian Health
No. 121: Valley Hospital, Ridgewood – Valley Health System
No. 167: Overlook Medical Center, Summit – Atlantic Health System
No. 201: Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark – RWJBarnabas Health
No. 317: Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Englewood – Englewood Health
No. 406: Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch – RWJBarnabas Health

Though some of the rankings have shifted, the same list of hospitals was also recognized on 2022’s World’s Best Hospitals list by Newsweek.

The 2023 list is scored on four metrics, including a new category, Newsweek said, regarding the implementation status of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures, standardized and validated questionnaires that evaluate how patients feel about their health

The other metrics used to compile the rankings are: hospital recommendations from medical experts, using an international online survey including more than 80,000 doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals; patient experience; and hospital quality metrics, data regarding quality of care for treatments, hygiene measures, patient safety and staffing.
