Morristown Medical Center handled 6,906 cardiac procedures in 2023, placing the facility first on the NJBIZ Leads & Data Center’s most recent compilation of the state’s top cardiac care providers.

The hospital performed 1,360 open heart surgeries and 1,883 total PCI procedures.

Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center ranked second. The team there completed 5,868 cardiac services. Surgeons performed 780 open heart operations and the Neptune facility treated 1,729 patients with PCI procedures.

In the third spot, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick processed 3,880 cardiac cases. Doctors performed 735 open heart surgeries.

Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack and AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s Mainland Campus in Pomona round out the top five. Hackensack performed 3,609 procedures; AtlantiCare completed 3,560. The facilities handled 744 and 255 open hear surgeries, respectively.

Several hospitals on the list performed zero open heart surgeries. Hackensack Meridian JFK University Medical Center completed 3,348 cardiac services without open heart operations. RWJBarnabas Health Community Medical Center handled 1,911 procedures, also without heart surgery.

Cooper University Health Care merged with Cape Regional Health System during 2024. Atlantic Health System planned a partnership with Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. These changes occurred after the 2023 data collection period.

How we did it

The list is based on statistics compiled by the New Jersey Department of Health from January–December 2023 and on NJBIZ research. Procedures included diagnostic tests, elective interventions and emergency treatments. Each facility submitted data showing their contribution to cardiac care across New Jersey.
