NJ hospitals, Rowan showcase new health tech (photos)

Several health care networks and educational institutions around New Jersey recently shared their latest technology advancements with NJBIZ. Take a look at what’s Atlantic Health medical centers, Englewood Hospital and The Valley Hospital now offer, as well as what Rowan University researchers had under development.

  • <em>Atlantic Health:</em> In March, the network announced that two of its medical centers will introduce new tools designed to detect cardiovascular disease in "even the most often-overlooked blood vessels in the heart."<br />
<br />
Developed by Abbot, the CoroFlow Cardiovascular System with PressureWire X Guidewire provides a comprehensive assessment of a patient's coronary physiology.<br />
<br />
Interventional cardiologist Dr. Lindsay Elbaum, pictured here, recently joined Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center’s cardiology team. She has used CoroFlow for more than four years and said it has helped offer solutions to patients whose chest pain could be missed by traditional angiograms alone.<br />
<br />
“CoroFlow opens the door to answers that will provide patients with not only a diagnosis but also treatment options,” Elbaum said. “Even in cases in which patients receive a negative result, the comprehensive nature of the system delivers peace of mind that their chest pain may not be from the heart.” - PROVIDED BY ATLANTIC HEALTH
  • <em>Atlantic Health:</em> The advanced platform is now available at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center. They system will soon offer it at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center, too. - PROVIDED BY ATLANTIC HEALTH
  • <em>Englewood Hospital:</em> The facility recently acquired the state-of-the-art Siemens biplane imaging system. The technology delivers real-time visibility inside the brain’s blood vessels. It enables "intervention in complex stroke and neurovascular cases that previously could not be treated," Englewood said in a March 12 announcement.<br />
<br />
“In just the first couple of weeks using this technology, we’ve already seen the difference it can make for patients with the most severe strokes,” said Dr. Joseph Carnevale, director of endovascular stroke at Englewood Hospital. “The level of clarity it gives us when navigating the brain’s blood vessels allows us to move faster and treat with incredible precision when every second counts.” - PROVIDED BY ENGLEWOOD HEALTH
  • <em>Rowan University:</em> Mohammad Abedin-Nasab and his team of researchers at Rowan University have introduced Robossis Alpha, the world’s first robotic surgical system designed for minimally invasive alignment of fractured long bones. This advanced prototype is nearing clinical trials, Rowan announced March 6. The tech ensures precise bone positioning to prevent complications. <br />
<br />
“The first surgery I observed was a 2-year-old boy with a broken femur,” Abedin-Nasab said. “The patient lost 1 liter of his blood and there were a lot of complications. After observing that surgery, I said there is a problem and I have to develop something to fix this problem.” - PROVIDED BY ROWAN UNIVERSITY
  • <em>Valley Health System:</em> The Valley Hospital in Paramus recently acquired the da Vinci 5 Surgical System, the latest generation in robotic surgical technology. The system by Intuitive Surgical can be used in minimally invasive surgical procedures in gynecology, urology and bariatrics, as well as in cardiothoracic, colorectal and general surgery. <br />
<br />
From left: Dr. Igor Elyash, general surgeon and the first Valley doctor to use the da Vinci 5; Dr. Edward Yatco, medical director of robotic and minimally invasive surgery and director of Bariatric Surgery; and Dr. Howard Jones, director of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Yatco and Jones are also co-chairs of Valley’s robotics committee. <br />
<br />
“This leading-edge technology helps our surgical patients experience fewer complications, less post-operative pain, and shorter recovery times," Yatco noted. - PROVIDED BY VALLEY HEALTH SYSTEM
