The NJ Transit board of directors authorized the agency to make a major purchase toward the continued modernization of its bus fleet.

The April 9 approval clears $393.4 million in funding to purchase 208 60-foot articulated (including spare parts) and 20 battery electric buses.

Key features of the new fleet include:

  • The longer articulated buses provide capacity for 100 customers, versus 50 with the current buses in use. The agency says this will provide fleet reliability at reduced operating and maintenance costs. Buses will come equipped with the latest technology to significantly reduce emissions;
  • Battery electric buses advance the goal of transitioning to a 100% zero-emission bus fleet by 2040;
  • Both types of buses feature low flooring to allow customers to embark and disembark more quickly;
  • All new buses include amenities, such as USB charging ports, security cameras, blind spot cameras and turn warning systems.

NJ Transit appointed Kris Kolluri to serve as president and CEO, effective Jan. 15, 2025.

President and CEO Kris Kolluri said replacing outdated buses and rail cars across the system continues an agency commitment to improve service for customers.

“And today’s board action is a meaningful step forward,” he said. “Gov. [Phil] Murphy’s FY2026 budget continues to prioritize transit, giving NJ Transit the ability to accelerate advancing a modern, more reliable fleet that will better accommodate growing ridership and significantly enhance the customer experience.”

NJ Transit says it will finalize a vendor and contract during the procurement process.
