Pic Page: Celebrating Earth Day 2026

April 27, 2026 12:01 am

Listen to this article

Companies and residents around New Jersey marked Earth Day through projects, volunteer efforts and more. Take a look.

  • Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Chief Sustainability Officer Nicole Hewitt-Cabral announced April 22 the winning youth-led sustainability project selected through a citywide ‘Gen Green’ ballot vote, at City Hall to celebrate Earth Day. The Gen Green initiative is the nation’s first-ever youth-led participatory budgeting process focused on climate and sustainability. The initiative instills democratic ideals and empowers Newark’s youth to directly shape how sustainability funding is invested, following a voting process featuring 14 proposed projects. Twenty-four schools, several afterschool programs and shelters participated, generating 300 ideas and engaging more than 3,000 young people. - PROVIDED BY CITY OF NEWARK
  • PSEG highlighted how it lives up to its “Public Service” name this Earth Day through its community-based environmental initiatives. “As we recognize Earth Day, we’re reminded that caring for the environment is core to the success of our business,” said Senior Vice President – Corporate Citizenship Rick Thigpen. PSEG's 2025 environmental efforts include: planting 775 trees through the utility’s Vegetation Management program; managing 51 pollinator habitat enhancement sites totaling approximately 325 acres; continuing work to reduce operational emissions; and helping nearly 480,000 customers participate in Clean Energy Future – Energy Efficiency programs, delivering more than $900 million in annual customer savings through rebates, upgrades and services. - PROVIDED BY PSEG
  • For the third consecutive year, LG Electronics the brand synonymous with Life’s Good, transformed its Englewood Cliffs campus into a nature sanctuary April 22 with an array of conservation activities fueled by brave optimism in honor of Earth Day. - PROVIDED BY LG
  • For LG, Earth Day creates a natural inflection point that allows employees to get outside, connect with nature and get their hands dirty. As part of this year's celebration, LG built on its long-standing relationship with National Wildlife Federation and Flat Rock Brook Nature Center to reinforce their commitment to creating a better life for all. - PROVIDED BY LG
  • In celebration of Earth Day, SJI subsidiaries South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas provided resources and supported local communities through a series of cleanup volunteer efforts. Here on April 16, the Green Team partnered with the NJA Stewardship Staff at the Nature Center of Cape May to help remove invasive plants, plant herbs and flowers, and pick up litter along the shoreline. In addition to volunteer activities, SJI and its employees committed to pledging more than $40,000, which included a dollar-for-dollar company match, to The Nature Conservancy this year as part of the company’s Employee Giving Campaign. - PROVIDED BY SJI
  • In honor of Earth Day April 22, Hackensack Meridian Health highlighted how the health care industry can play a leading role in building a more sustainable future. HMH says it is pioneering a system-wide approach that embeds sustainability into every facet of operations. Efforts include: forging a 30-year Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) partnership with Bernhard, including a $134 million investment in on-site solar and battery storage, making HMH the owner of the largest renewable energy system of any not-for-profit health care provider in the U.S.; several HMH hospitals secured funding from PSEG, New Jersey Natural Gas and Elizabethtown Gas to upgrade infrastructure, equating to $45 million, which will reduce energy consumption by over 10 million kwh and over 750,000 therms; hospital team members manage apiaries on the rooftops of Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Ocean University Medical Center, pictured here, contributing to local pollination and producing hundreds of pounds of honey for the community; and more. - PROVIDED BY HACKENSACK MERIDIAN HEALTH
