Two more stores in New Jersey will permanently close as part of the chain’s ongoing efforts to reset its business.

According to the company’s website, the following outposts will go dark:

A spokesperson for Walgreens told NJBIZ, “Our team members are being supported through these transitions, including opportunities to continue employment at other Walgreens locations. Walgreens remains committed to serving communities through nearby stores, and delivery options.”

“We recognize these changes may be disruptive for residents who rely on these pharmacies, particularly for essential medications. Decisions to close stores are never made lightly, and we are committed to making the transition as seamless as possible,” the media representative said.

“After the store closure dates, prescriptions will be automatically transferred to nearby Walgreens locations to ensure uninterrupted service. Prescriptions from the Bogota location will transfer to Walgreens at 520 Cedar Ln. in Teaneck, and prescriptions from the Dumont location will transfer to Walgreens at 241 N. Washington Ave. in Bergenfield. Patients who have relied on these locations will also be eligible for free prescription delivery for 90 days following the closures,” they went on.

Additional assistance for customers is available at walgreens.com/storelocator or by calling 1-800-WALGREENS.

Walgreens’ shrinking footprint

Walgreens unveiled a turnaround strategy in June 2024. Under the plan, the Illinois-based chain expects to shutter roughly 1,200 underperforming stores in the U.S. over a three-year period. The move aims to help create a smaller, more profitable footprint.

At the time, Walgreens said it would target poor-performing locations where the company owns the property or where leases are expiring. Since then, the fleet has dropped from about 8,600 stores to roughly 8,000 sites nationwide.

Within New Jersey, Walgreens has reduced its presence from over 190 outposts to around 180 locations.

The company is also moving to streamline operations. Additionally, Walgreens plans to refocus on its core pharmacy operations and invest in stores that have the strongest long-term prospects.

Private equity firm Sycamore Partners acquired Walgreens in August 2025 in a deal valued at $10 billion. Following the transaction’s close, Walgreens became a private company.

Based in New York City, Sycamore’s investments also include Village MD, Staples, Lane Bryant, Staples, The Limited, Hot Topic, Torrid and Jersey Shore-born Playa Bowls.
