Acme Edgewater supermarket closure prompts 115 layoffs

An Inc. store in North Jersey will shutter for good this summer after losing its lease, according to company officials.

Ahead of the closure, the -owned chain notified 115 workers at its Edgewater supermarket that it will eliminate the positions, according to a filing with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development.

An Albertsons spokesperson told NJBIZ the store at is slated to go dark “on or about Aug. 15, 2026.”

“The company’s priority is placing as many associates as possible in other locations. Human resources and labor relations will work closely with affected associates and their unions, where applicable, to identify opportunities consistent with labor agreements and applicable law,” the media representative shared in a statement. “Associates who are unable to secure another position will be eligible for severance in accordance with those agreements and laws.”

Acme was founded in Philadelphia in 1891. The banner is known for its traditional grocery offerings, pharmacy departments and weekly deals. It became part of the Albertsons portfolio in 1999 as part of an $11.7 billion buyout of the American Stores Co.

The regional supermarket chain has 157 stores across the Northeast and employs over 15,000 associates. Within New Jersey, it has 68 locations.

Fast Company noted that Albertsons is reevaluating its store footprint in the wake of a failed $25 million merger with grocery giant Kroger. At least a dozen closures have been reported across the company’s lineup of chains, including Acme, Balducci’s, Safeway and Vons. Most of the impacted stores were in California and Texas, Fast Company reported. However, an Acme in Sussex County closed earlier this year, according to the publication.

The Edgewater Acme officially opened in October 2015 in a former Pathmark site at the River Road shopping center. Following Montvale-headquartered Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy that year, Acme acquired the 63,966-square-foot outpost in . It was one among dozens of acquired by Acme.

Altogether, Acme spent $246 million to purchase 72 locations across Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania under the A&P, Superfresh and Pathmark banners.

It is unclear what will replace Acme at Edgewater Commons. Property manager did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The property’s tenant mix also includes Burlington, Cava, CityMD Urgent Care, Five Below, Jag One Physical Therapy and many others.
