Grand opening set for gigantic new ShopRite in South Jersey

Zallie Family Markets is preparing to unveil a massive new ShopRite in South Jersey.

Scheduled to open Dec. 7 in Gloucester Township, the 75,000-square-foot store will include many offerings that are popular in other stores owned and operated by the family-run grocer, such as:

Hot food bar and international cheese department
Wok station and sushi department
Floral and gift department
Pharmacy
Zallie’s Fresh Kitchen catering

It will also have an area dedicated to ShopRite‘s online shopping service, according to the owner.

“This isn’t just a supermarket, it’s a massive, brand-new, state-of-the-art shopping and culinary destination, locally owned and operated by Zallie Family Markets,” the grocers shared.

At Cherrywood Plaza, ShopRite takes over a space that has been vacant since Kmart closed in 2017.

The upcoming store will replace the existing ShopRite of Laurel Hill less than a mile away. That site launched in 1973 as the company’s first supermarket in the region.

A final day for ShopRite of Laurel Hill was not announced.

Entertainment awaits

As part of the grand-opening festivities planned for Dec. 7, the new store will hold a 9 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event will also include magicians, juggling stilt walkers, face painting, a live DJ, caricature artist and free samples.

“We also heard from a little elf that Santa and his Reindeer are coming to town,” Zallie Family Markets shared in a social media post.

A member of Keasbey-based retailer co-op Wakefern Food Corp., Zallie Family Markets owns and operates 11 ShopRite locations in South Jersey and one in Philadelphia.

In May 2023, the company completed a remodel of ShopRite of Glassboro, which marked the store’s first major renovation since opening over 25 years ago. A few weeks later, it opened a new ShopRite in Woolwich Township to replace an older store in Gibbstown.

Zallie Family Markets recently received local approval to expand its location in West Deptford, too, according to The Courier Post.

As part of that plan, ShopRite expects to grow the size of that store from 89,000 square feet to 132,000 square feet by taking over a majority of the Mantua Pike shopping center. That includes space formerly occupied by bankrupt discount chain Big Lots.
