The basics:

  • helped drive $2B in NJ economic activity in 2024
  • contributed $725M to the state economy
  • Platform supported 25,000+ jobs for Garden State merchants and suppliers
  • 85% of merchants would recommend DoorDash to other businesses

New Jersey merchant sales via third-party platform DoorDash generated more than $2 billion in economic activity last year, according to a new report.

Overall, the San Francisco-based company reported that its business supported an estimated $106 billion in economic activity in the U.S. in 2024 and nearly $20 billion in tax revenues.

In its annual report, DoorDash said its platform enabled more than 7 million drivers (“dashers”) to earn over $16 billion, while small businesses made upwards of $40 billion in sales.

Within New Jersey, dasher earnings fostered more than $725 million in economic activity. Local sales also supported more than 25,000 jobs for merchants and the suppliers they rely on, DoorDash said.

Commenting on the results, Cheryl Young, the company’s head of policy research, said, “Across the U.S., DoorDash’s impact is felt every day whenever a consumer gets their favorite meal, groceries, or a last-minute item from a neighborhood favorite.”

She went on to say, “We’re excited to unveil our economic impact report detailing how dashing helps Dashers achieve their goals, how delivery makes busy parents’ lives easier, and how partnering with DoorDash supports the local businesses that are key to our economy. We are proud of our tremendous impact on consumers, Dashers, and merchants in New Jersey, and look forward to growing our footprint in the community for years to come.”

Just a dash

As part of its annual economic impact report, DoorDash also surveyed its dashers and merchant partners.

According to the results, 92% of dashers say they do so because it provides them with more flexibility than other earning opportunities. Seventy-eight percent said they feel less stressed about their financial situation because they can dash when they need to.

In addition to being able to flexibly earn on the platform, dashers also said they enjoy connecting with people in their communities. Ninety-six percent of respondents reported that they feel satisfied with their experience of getting to know restaurants and merchants in their local community and 91% said it helped them to get to know their local community.

Meanwhile, merchants on DoorDash believe the service is a way to connect with more customers and grow their earnings. Without DoorDash, 89% of respondents feel they’d have lower customer growth and 85% think they’d have lower overall revenue.

Eighty-five percent of survey participants also said they’d recommend partnering with DoorDash to other businesses.

Conducted this past winter, the nationwide survey included responses from 1,107 dashers, 548 merchant partners and 914 consumers.
