The basics:

A Connecticut-based healthy protein shake franchise backed by “Saved by the Bell” star Mario Lopez is setting its sights on New Jersey.

Coming to 17 Godwin Ave. in Ridgewood, Fresh Monkee aims to offer an alternative to protein smoothies made with artificial ingredients.

A company representative told NJBIZ a grand opening date is slated for Nov. 17 for the Garden State shop.

Founded in 2014 by former athlete and working mother Judy Flynn, Fresh Monkee offers fresh, high-protein shakes, made to order using whole fruits and vegetables, natural nut butters, high-quality protein and minimal added sugar. Since its launch, the brand has sold more than 1.5 million shakes.

Since launching a franchise program in 2022, Fresh Monkee has grown to 25 locations across the U.S. Besides New Jersey, the chain hopes to develop markets such as Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Arizona and Utah.

Some of the most popular items from its lineup include:

  • Antioxidant Berry – mixed berries, spinach, pomegranate and orange juices, milk (or alternative) and vanilla protein
  • Chunkee Monkee –banana, natural peanut butter and choice of chocolate or vanilla protein
  • Cinnamon Toast –vanilla protein, milk, Nutella, graham cracker, banana and a hint of cinnamon
  • Filthy Monkee –chocolate protein, a brownie protein bar and natural peanut butter

There are also vegan, gluten-free and low-FODMAP options.

Sweet ‘validation’

Flynn

Reflecting on the recent 1.5 million shakes milestone, Flynn said, “It’s a number that still stops me in my tracks. It’s proof that people are craving something different: real food, real nutrition, and real results. We’ve built this with heart, hustle, and a relentless focus on quality.”

“To see our concept now thriving in 15 states and growing fast into new markets—it’s more than just business growth. It’s validation that our mission resonates from coast to coast,” Flynn added.

Slater-approved

Fresh Monkee also just announced that actor and television host Mario Lopez plans to invest in the brand and spearhead its expansion in California.

In addition to being best known for his role as A.C. Slater on the hit 1990s teen series “Saved by the Bell,” Lopez is an advocate for health and wellness. The married father of three frequently shares insights into his active lifestyle and nutrition tips with his 3.2 million Instagram followers.

Commenting on his involvement with the brand, Lopez said, “I’ve tried a lot of protein shakes, and most of them don’t make the cut. Fresh Monkee offers a delicious, nutritious alternative that I’m excited to bring to California. It’s a game-changer for anyone looking to fuel their body the right way.”

Flynn added, “Our mission is to provide genuine, unpretentious food that’s both delicious and convenient. Partnering with Mario, who embodies a healthy and active lifestyle, allows us to reach more people seeking nutritious options.”
