  • The New Jersey Bankers Association and Spencer Savings Bank partnered to host a financial literacy workshop for veterans during Financial Literacy Month April 8. Joining them at NJBankers’ Cranford offices were Union County Commissioners Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded and Sergio Granados. The workshop was led by Carmen Rivera, vice president, Business and Community Development Officer, Spencer Savings Bank. Attendees gained insights into basic banking and financial planning.   • United Way of Greater Newark recently wrapped up this year’s Celebrity Read program. In 2024, the effort reached nearly 1,000 students, bringing over 200 volunteers to 12 schools in Newark, Orange and Irvington to read to students in a celebration of literacy. Corporate and community volunteers from all walks of life joined to read to local children. The group included local fire fighters, FBI agents and local celebrities Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche and Anthony “Treach” Criss from Naughty By Nature.<br />

  • BodyBio, a family-owned and operated business, made a generous five-year annual pledge of $10,000 to support Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties (JFS).   • The Housing Authority of Plainfield and Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church held a roundtable discussion April 10 with executive community leaders addressing solutions for homelessness prevention. The “Leveraging Community Partnership with Executive Community Stakeholders Initiatives for 2024” event was co-hosted by HAP’s Joanne Hollis Gardens Community Resource Center and serves as a community behavioral health platform for crisis management through educational awareness.<br />

  • Volunteers from Atlantic City Electric, KABOOM!, Gateway Community Action Partnership, the Borough of Paulsboro and community members came together to bring a children-designed and community-built playground to life at the West Buck Street Park in Paulsboro. Hundreds of local volunteers took park in this one-day, community-driven playground build April 10. This project represents progress in ensuring every child has a place to play, providing a state-of-the-art playground for children to enjoy each year.<br />

  • In recognition of Agriculture Day, fifth grade students in Bernards Township recently enjoyed a “Show-and-Tell” visit from three local farmers, a cow, and a chicken. The farmers emphasized the importance of farm-to-table agriculture in local communities when speaking to students from Liberty Corner Elementary and Oak Street Elementary Schools. They also discussed the value of agriculture to the economy and provided fun facts about their farm animals. Attending the event were Bernards Township Mayor Jennifer Asay, Bernards Township Committee member Ana Duarte McCarthy, staff from the Somerset County Agriculture Development Board, and Somerset County Commissioner Paul Drake. Participating farms included English Farms, Abma’s Farms and Middlebush Dairy Farm.<br />
