The rollout of PATH‘s new contactless fare payment system continues in earnest, as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Wednesday that TAPP is now available at all stations in New Jersey and New York.
The news follows the activation of new TAPP readers in New York at the Christoper Street and 9th Street stations. Those additions follow the installation of readers at the 14th Street and 23rd Street stations earlier this month.
As NJBIZ reported, Total Access PATH Payment arrived at all New Jersey PATH stations outfitted in April. The open-loop contactless payment system allows riders to use any contactless credit/debit card or a digital wallet on their smartphones to pay their fare.
Since being introduced during a December pilot program, almost 120 PATH turnstiles are now TAPP-enabled. There are a total 341 active turnstiles. So far, rides have used the system some 5 million times.
While the TAPP integration continues, equipment supporting both SmartLink and MetroCard as payment remains operational at all stations.
PATH Director/General Manager Clarelle DeGraffe said that this milestone underscores the agency’s commitment to improving travel for all riders.
“As anyone already using TAPP knows, the new fare payment option offers a smoother and more accessible experience for our customers,” said DeGraffe.
“Tens of thousands of PATH riders so far have experienced the ease of tap-and-go to travel between New York and New Jersey – and we encourage more customers to try using their own credit or debit card, or their smartphone,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. “We are thrilled that riders no longer have to stand in lines to top up their SmartLink or MetroCards because their PATH fare payment of choice is already in their own hand.”
“The distance between New York and New Jersey has shortened considerably now that TAPP is available at every single PATH station,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “Travel between the two states has never been as easy or as seamless now that every PATH ride is just a hop, skip, and TAPP away.”
