Zaxbys, a Georgia-based southern fried chicken chain, is set to hatch its first New Jersey restaurants.
After signing a deal to develop six units statewide, franchisee GSP Group expects to open two of those locations next summer, the fast-casual brand said in a news release.
Site selection is still underway, but a company spokesperson said the first-to-launch restaurants will be in South Jersey, “just north of Philadelphia.”
Known for its signature sauces, fried chicken, sandwiches and salads, the 34-year-old chain has more than 950 outposts across 17 states. It’s also been recognized as a top franchise on Entrepreneur’s top 500 list since 2013.
Zaxbys’ push into New Jersey is part of a larger expansion effort by the brand to open more than 200 restaurants nationally within the next few years.
Led by Premanand Gupta, GSP Group owns and operates several other franchise businesses in New Jersey, including Dunkin’, Subway and Blaze Pizza.

Gupta, a longtime Garden State resident, shared in a statement, “We started looking into Zaxbys about a year ago. We have always been interested in the growing chicken market, and Zaxbys stood out with its exceptional product and strong business model. We’re confident that it will quickly become a local favorite.”
According to Gupta, the plan is to establish a strong presence in South Jersey before expanding to other parts of the state.
Zaxbys Chief Development Officer Mike Mettler expressed excitement for the company’s newest partnership.
“We are eager to see Zaxbys expand into New Jersey with such experienced and passionate owners. The GSP Group’s strong operational background and commitment to excellence make them the ideal partners to grow our brand in this new market,” he stated.
