Former NJ Transit head starts new Rutgers role next month

There’s additional information on former president and CEO Kevin Corbett’s new role at Rutgers University.

Corbett will join Rutgers School of Engineering Feb. 15 as a senior fellow of transportation studies. NJBIZ reported about his departure from the transit agency, effective Jan. 15. At NJ Transit, Kris Kolluri succeeded him in the leadership post.

“I am very excited to join University as a senior fellow of transportation studies,” said Corbett. “This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the university and the School of ‘s dynamic transportation portfolio. I am eager to share my experience and knowledge with future transportation professionals, fostering their growth and innovation.”

Corbett led NJ Transit for seven years. His tenure included efforts to enhance customer service, modernize critical infrastructure, renovate and expand stations, as well as introduce new fleets of rail cars. Meanwhile, also dealing with challenges such as the pandemic and its aftermath, facing heat over service issues, fare hikes and the agency’s fiscal health.

He also played a key role in launching the North American Regional Training Center of the International Association of Public Transport. The center fosters training and develops next-generation transit leaders.

In this new role with Rutgers, Corbett will:

  • Collaborate with the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation;
  • Represent the school and research center as well as mentor students and faculty;
  • Contribute to ongoing research initiatives;
  • Facilitate external partnerships and opportunities for the center.

“As a senior transportation fellow, Kevin will enhance the university’s research and education in transportation,” said Ali Maher, director of the center and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Rutgers. “We are thrilled to welcome him and look forward to his role in advancing transportation initiatives and fostering meaningful collaborations on a broader scale.”

“Mentoring students, young faculty and research professionals will be a key focus, as we work together to develop creative solutions to transportation challenges in New Jersey, the region, and the nation,” said Corbett. “I look forward to making a meaningful impact and advancing the field through collaboration and innovation at Rutgers.”
