One of the oldest continuously operating stores at Cherry Hill Mall is starting its next chapter with a fresh look.

After making its brick-and-mortar debut in 1963 at the Route 38 shopping center, novelty retailer Spencer’s is unveiling a new space with an updated design.

Founded in 1947 as a mail-order catalog in Pennsylvania, the Egg Harbor Township-based brand has since grown to become a staple in shopping malls. The banner boasts more than 680 retail locations, as well as an online presence.

While known for its gag gifts and décor, Spencer’s also sells apparel, accessories, drinkware and sexual health & wellness products. Spencer’s parent company, Spencer Spirit Holdings Inc., also owns specialty retailer Spirit Halloween.

‘Every step of the way’

Ahead of relocating at Cherry Hill Mall, Spencer’s closed its old space May 11.

The new store officially opened May 22, according to a spokesperson for the PREIT Realty-owned property.

Aside from a larger footprint than the previous 1,750-square-foot site, the new 2,700-square-foot location includes a commemorative plaque honoring the mall’s significance to the brand.

The shopping center’s media representative said the newly unveiled Spencer’s is not in the same spot as the retailer’s first store in 1963.

“The mall has evolved significantly over the years and retailers have moved locations as the property has changed,” they said.

At Cherry Hill Mall, Spencer’s and Macy’s are the only two original tenants left. Until the mid-1980s, Macy’s operated as part of the company’s Bamberger’s division before it converted to the flagship brand.

Cherry Hill Mall Senior Marketing Director Lisa Wolstromer said, “As one of the first enclosed malls in the country, we’ve been a launchpad for iconic brands for more than six decades. Spencer’s has been with us every step of the way, and we’re honored that the company chose to house its new space here. It’s a fitting tribute to that shared history.”

She added, “Spencer’s holds a special place in Cherry Hill Mall’s story; they started a legacy here that has defined generations.”

A Spencer’s spokesperson shared, “Cherry Hill Mall is where the Spencer’s story began in 1963, and while our store may have a new location within the mall, the attitude remains unchanged.”

“This new space celebrates our history of the brand, delivering the fun, unexpected, and unapologetically Spencer’s experience customers have loved for more than six decades,” he said.
