Target is honing in on Jersey City with the launch of a third store.
Scheduled to open May 17 at 381 Route 440, the big box retailer takes over space previously occupied by Kmart.
According to the Minnesota-based chain, the soon-to-open 119,000-square-foot outpost will feature an expanded selection of fresh and affordable produce, meat and dairy. It will also house a CVS Pharmacy and Starbucks onsite.
Services will include drive up, order pickup and same-day delivery with Target Circle 360. Next-day delivery will be available to all of Jersey City, too.
Following the grand opening, it will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and employ about more than 180 workers.
The upcoming store is among the more than 30 locations Target says it expects to add this year as part of its ongoing push to unveil 300 new sites by 2035. The $5 billion capital investment plan also includes more than 130 store remodels in coming months, according to the company.
Within New Jersey, the chain recently celebrated grand openings at Journal Square in Jersey City and West Orange Plaza in West Orange.
In Jersey City, Target added a 40,000-square-foot small-format store on the ground level of Kushner Cos.’s mixed-use development The Journal. The chain’s first Jersey City location opened more than 20 years ago at Newport.
Following a multimillion-dollar upgrade of West Orange Plaza in West Orange, Target unveiled a 150,000-square-foot store. Similar to the soon-to-open site on Route 440 in Jersey City, that space also formerly housed a Kmart.
Target Chief Stores Officer Adrienne Costanzo said, “Our continued commitment to opening new stores is really about showing up for our guests and our communities — and it starts with our incredible store team members.”
“These new stores give our teams the tools and environments to bring our merchandising strengths to life, create easier and more inspiring shopping experiences, and use technology to move smarter and faster every day. It’s how we keep growing thoughtfully, stay connected to our communities and make Target an even better place to work and shop,” she said.
Of Target’s 2,000 sites across the U.S., New Jersey is home to 55 stores. The company also operates distribution centers in Perth Amboy and Logan Township, as well as a Target.com fulfillment center in Burlington.
Overall, Target employs more than 12,800 workers statewide.
The retailer also highlighted its more than $9.6 million in charitable giving last year in New Jersey. Those efforts included over 4.5 million pounds of food donated to local food banks and 27,000 hours of volunteer work, Target said.
