A former Lidl grocery store in South Jersey has found a new life as an Aldi supermarket.
Located at 1801 Mount Holly Road in Burlington Township, the no-frills grocer celebrated its grand opening with a Nov. 20 ribbon-cutting ceremony, giveaways and prizes.
Founded 64 years ago in Germany, Aldi is known for its low prices and private label brands. Since its U.S. debut in 1976, the chain has opened nearly 2,500 stores nationwide.
As part of a $3.4 billion initiative to expand its footprint and modernize its existing stores, Aldi has grown its presence across New Jersey by building new locations as well as revamping old ones over the past five years. It now has 67 stores locally.
In March 2024, the company also announced it would invest $9 billion to add 800 new stores across the U.S. According to Aldi, 330 of those supermarkets will open in the Northeast and Midwest over the next four years.
In Burlington Township, Aldi is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Offerings include dairy, eggs, produce, meat, seafood, deli, frozen foods, bakery goods, snacks, cereals, pantry essentials, beverages, alcohol, pet supplies, baby products, household supplies, personal care and seasonal items.
Between July 2020 and July 2023, one of Aldi’s biggest competitors, Lidl, occupied the space.
After being deemed as one of several underperforming locations across the U.S., the store closed as part of a strategic shift to focus more on core metropolitan markets, like New York City and Washington, D.C.
In addition to Burlington, the chain also closed a store in Howell.
Also a German-born brand, Lidl offers high-quality fresh produce, meat, baked goods and household items at low prices. Its global footprint of 12,000 stores includes roughly 200 locations in the U.S.
After its November 2017 debut in Vineland, the chain has added 26 other stores. Within the past year, it has launched in Paramus, Freehold and Hackensack.
