Camden-based American Water is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States.

The organization has a history dating back to 1886 – and serves more than 14 million people in 14 states and on 18 military installations.

The Garden State subsidiary – New Jersey American Water – continued its growth and evolution this year, which included the acquisitions of Salem City water and wastewater systems and the Borough of Manville’s wastewater collection system.

Over the last five years, New Jersey American Water has completed seven acquisitions – adding more than 18,600 new water and/or wastewater customers.

In September, New Jersey American Water announced it had successfully replaced nearly 10,000 lead service lines – putting it on pace to meet the requirements of a New Jersey state law passed in 2021 that mandates water providers replace lead service lines by 2031.

“The considerable progress we’ve made in just three years demonstrates our unwavering commitment to modernizing water infrastructure and protecting public health,” said Mark McDonough, president, New Jersey American Water. “We’re not just meeting legislative requirements; we’re setting the standard for proactive lead mitigation in New Jersey. Our work, however, is far from over, and we need our customers’ continued cooperation to work with us to identify remaining lead service lines.”
