Prudential Financial “rocks” one of the business world’s most recognizable logos. The company also occupies a prominent space in the skyline of Newark, its headquarters city. And Pru’s name is on a world-class arena in downtown Newark, home to the NHL’s New Jersey Devils and the site of major concerts and televised major awards ceremonies.

All of that makes Prudential an anchor institution in Newark, and, by extension, one of the most important companies in the state.

Oh, and Pru also ranks among the world’s largest and most prominent financial services providers. According to its most recent figures, the company has assets under management of about $1.6 trillion. Its U.S. businesses produce addjusted operating income of more than $1.1 billion and its international operations generate AOI of about $766 million.

Founded in 1875, the company has about 50 million customers in more than 50 countries. And it employees more than 40,000 people around the world.

In addition, The Prudential Foundation has donated more than $1 billion to help foster economic mobility; 88% of non-employee directors are from diverse backgrounds; and it has made $39.1 billion of sustainable investments that promote sustainability and achieve market returns.

Here at home, the company in June said 66 organizations received awards in the 2024 Prudential Community Grants Program. Recipients represent each of the city’s five wards. Participation increased significantly from the program’s first year, with 400 applications received in 2024. According to Prudential, that’s up 78% over the inaugural effort. The winning projects support community health and wellness, arts, education, beautification and development. Prudential will support the neighborhood-based solutions with a $300,000 grant to the Community Foundation of New Jersey.
