From its expanding headquarters in Little Egg Harbor, Spencer Spirit Holdings is parent company to brands with high profiles for seasoned shoppers: Spencer’s and Spirit Halloween.

In 2023, the 40-plus-year-old business started work to add 81,000 square feet of space at its campus to accommodate a growing workforce. At the time, the corporate office housed 700 employees. Speaking then, CEO Steven Silverstein said the project would further strengthen the company’s commitment to the community and its associates.

However, both the Spencer’s and Spirit brands’ renown extends well beyond the borders of the Garden State.

While the former mall-staple has more than 670 retail locations, the latter just capped an epic spooky season. This year, Spirit Halloween brought more than 1,500 retail locations nationwide back to life. Within its native New Jersey, it opened doors on more than three dozen locations.

While the merchandise may be seasonal, the work to plan, launch, operate and wrap-up the locations takes place year-round. And though the sites are temporary, they can be a boon to property owners or landlords that are looking to increase foot traffic at a property—or fill a vacancy, even temporarily.

In 2024, the company is also offering up another kind of seasonal “spirit.” With nearly half of the shops opening in New Jersey, Spirit Christmas began spreading cheer last month with 10 locations across the Northeast, including a flagship in Mays Landing. This isn’t the first time the company has tried to tap the ghosts of Christmas “presents.” After attempts in 1990 as well as 2005 and 2006, the latest effort comes as retailers gear up for a record-breaking year.
