From its start in North Jersey more than 95 years ago, Suburban Propane LP has spread across the country clear to the West Coast.

A publicly traded master limited partnership since 1996, Whippany-based Suburban Propane serves approximately 1.1 million residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers through more than 700 locations in 42 states. Its team is equally large, topping 3,200 employees.

Though propane is in its name, the company specializes in heating oil and refined fuels, as well as the marketing of natural gas and electricity in deregulated markets.

It is also a producer of and investor in low carbon fuel alternatives, through its Suburban Renewable Energy LLC, launched in 2022. Over the past three years, that subsidiary has deployed more than $300 million in capital investments and acquisitions to build its portfolio.

At the helm for a decade, President and CEO Michael Stivala told NJBIZ this summer that the company has always maintained its Jersey roots – and that there aren’t plans for that to change.

“Over the decades, we’ve expanded north, south, west. … But our headquarters is still in New Jersey. Personally, I’ve never left the state. I love New Jersey. I was a Rutgers grad and grew up in Bloomfield – right by West Orange, where our original founder was – and never left the state.”

“I don’t intend to move the headquarters either,” he added.
