Leading one of the largest supermarket operators in New Jersey is Saker, a fourth-generation grocer, former chair of the New Jersey Food Council and the biggest stakeholder in Keasbey-based retailer-owned cooperative Wakefern Food Corp.
With more than three dozen ShopRite stores across Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Middlesex, Mercer and Somerset counties, as well as Dearborn Market in Holmdel; 39 pharmacies; two liquor stores; four commissary kitchens; and a transit dock facility that supports its local stores, Saker employs over 10,000 associates.
Over the past year, the Holmdel-based, family-owned and operated company celebrated the grand opening of a brand-new ShopRite in South Plainfield. The location replaced an existing Saker store in Piscataway. Looking ahead, Saker plans to build updated supermarkets in Manalapan, update its 60-year old store in Freehold and convert a former Kmart in Stafford into a ShopRite.
One of the grocer’s stores, ShopRite Wines & Liquors in Neptune, made headlines last March when it sold a lottery ticket worth $1.13 billion. Saker, known for giving back to the community – donated the $30,000 seller bonus to Fulfill, a community food bank that serves the Jersey Shore through ShopRite’s hunger-fighting Partners in Caring program.
