To say 2024 was a whirlwind for Helmy would be the understatement of the year.

Over the summer, he was tapped by his former boss, Gov. Phil Murphy (for whom he served as chief of staff), to fill New Jersey’s Senate seat that was vacated by Bob Menendez.

Helmy took office in September – agreeing to take on the role until the results of the November election were certified. That also meant he departed his executive role at RWJBarnabas Health.

He served dutifully until early December – clearing the way for elected Sen. Andy Kim – and making an impact during his short time in the Senate.

“Looking back on my now 85 days and counting in this office, I am proud of the work my team and I have been able to accomplish,” said Helmy, who served on committees and introduced and co-sponsored several bills. “I will look back on this time with great affection.”

In early December, RWJBarnabas Health announced Helmy would return to the health system  in the same role he held before the Senate stint.

“On behalf of the entire RWJBarnabas Health family, I want to commend Sen. George Helmy on his distinguished service in the U.S. Senate on behalf of the people of the great State of New Jersey,” said Mark Manigan, president and CEO, RWJBarnabas Health.
