Under the guidance of Lim — the ninth president of New Jersey Institute of Technology, who also holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering — the institution’s stature continues to rise. NJIT is enhancing research in artificial intelligence; cultivating major donors to support its students, curriculum, innovation and campus development; recruiting new leadership; and Lim is leading an expansion in housing and classroom space for a growing student body.
In September 2024, NJIT established the Grace Hopper AI Research Institute to become an innovator in researching AI and applying it to higher education. The $10 million initiative, which includes an anonymous donation and matching funds, will leverage the university’s extensive expertise in machine learning, computer processing and robotics.
That month, the NJIT board of trustees, in concert with Lim, approved a plan to rebuild the dormitory Oak Hall that will significantly expand the number of beds, from 180 to 454.
Lim is internationally recognized as a leading scholar in the field of structural vibrations and acoustics, and modeling and simulation technology. He was named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2018 and is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the Society of Automotive Engineers, from which he received numerous research and teaching awards.
